DentaQuest Awards Critical Funding to UNLV Dental School for Safety Net Oral Health Care Across Nevada

Donation supports University of Nevada Las Vegas dental clinics in serving unique needs of victims of domestic violence

DentaQuest, the nation’s leading purpose-driven oral health organization, today announced a $25,000 contribution to the University of Nevada Las Vegas (UNLV) School of Dental Medicine Student Outreach Fund to support dental care for women, children, veterans, homeless individuals and special populations with limited access to dental care.

The DentaQuest funds will directly support patient care provided by faculty, students and staff at the school’s onsite community outreach clinics.

“Community outreach programs like ours provide a dental safety net for many of our neighbors who have limited access to regular dental visits,” said Dr. Lily T. Garcia, dean of the UNLV School of Dental Medicine. “The impact of this pandemic has caused more Nevadans to seek out these programs for help. DentaQuest’s generous gift will support the expansion of our outreach for dental care, specifically among women and children who experience domestic violence.”

According to the World Health Organization, more families are experiencing violence in the home, brought on by increased economic and social stresses caused by the pandemic. This reality underscores the timeliness and importance of the work at UNLV School of Dental Medicine clinics.

“DentaQuest is pleased to support opportunities for UNLV dental students to gain experience in public health practices that emphasize prevention and reduce the burden of oral disease,” DentaQuest President & CEO Steve Pollock said. “Because of these hands-on experiences in team-based community care, the next generation of dental care providers will begin their careers with the essential skills necessary to treat our most vulnerable and focus on healthier individuals and communities overall.”
